MARPE Palatal Expansion

MARPE: Non-Surgical Palatal Expansion for Adults and Teens

At Kanaka Creek Family Dental, Dr. Sabrina offers MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion), a modern, minimally invasive approach to widening the upper jaw in teens and adults without the need for traditional jaw surgery.

A narrow upper jaw can contribute to crowding, crossbites, breathing difficulties, and sleep-disordered breathing. While conventional palatal expanders work well in younger children, the mid-palatal suture begins to fuse during adolescence, making expansion more challenging. MARPE uses temporary anchorage devices (TADs) to apply controlled force directly to the bone, allowing predictable expansion even in mature patients.

Why Choose MARPE Over Surgical Expansion?

Traditional surgically-assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) requires general anaesthesia and a recovery period. MARPE achieves similar results with a far less invasive approach. The procedure is performed in-office with local anaesthesia, involves minimal discomfort, and allows patients to return to their normal activities quickly. MARPE can also be combined with Invisalign treatment for comprehensive orthodontic correction.

MARPE FAQs

Have questions about MARPE palatal expansion? Here are some frequently asked questions:

  • What is MARPE?

MARPE stands for Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion. It is a technique that uses small titanium screws (TADs) placed in the palate to anchor an expander device. By turning the expander gradually, the mid-palatal suture is gently separated, widening the upper jaw. This approach allows palatal expansion in older teens and adults whose sutures have begun to fuse.

  • Who is a candidate for MARPE?

MARPE is ideal for teens and adults with a narrow upper jaw who would otherwise require surgical expansion. Candidates typically present with posterior crossbites, dental crowding, nasal airway constriction, or sleep-disordered breathing related to a narrow palate. Dr. Sabrina will evaluate your case with a CBCT scan to determine if MARPE is right for you.

  • Is the MARPE procedure painful?

The placement of the miniscrews and expander is done under local anaesthesia and is generally well-tolerated. Patients may feel some pressure during the activation phase as the expander is turned, but significant pain is uncommon. Over-the-counter pain medication is usually sufficient to manage any discomfort during the first few days.

  • How long does MARPE treatment take?

The active expansion phase typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, during which the expander is turned daily. After the desired expansion is achieved, the device remains in place for several months to allow the new bone to fill in and stabilize. The total treatment time, including the retention phase, is usually around 6 to 12 months.

  • Can MARPE be combined with Invisalign?

Yes, MARPE is often used as the first phase of treatment to create the space needed for proper tooth alignment. Once expansion is complete and stable, Dr. Sabrina can begin Invisalign treatment to fine-tune the bite and straighten the teeth. This combination provides comprehensive orthodontic correction without traditional braces or jaw surgery.

  • Does insurance cover MARPE?

Coverage for MARPE varies by insurance plan. Some dental and orthodontic plans may cover a portion of the treatment, particularly when it is deemed medically necessary for airway or skeletal issues. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. Our team can provide you with the necessary documentation and predetermination requests.
