Common Dental Emergencies

Not sure if your situation qualifies as a dental emergency? Here are some of the most common reasons patients visit us for urgent care:

  • Severe Toothache — Persistent or throbbing tooth pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter medication may indicate an infection or abscess.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth — Time is critical. If you can see us within 30 minutes, there's a good chance we can save the tooth.
  • Cracked or Broken Tooth — Chips, cracks, and fractures can expose the inner nerve, leading to pain and risk of infection.
  • Lost Filling or Crown — A missing restoration leaves the tooth vulnerable. We can place a temporary or permanent fix the same day using our CEREC technology.
  • Swelling or Abscess — Facial swelling, a pimple on your gums, or a bad taste in your mouth could signal a serious infection that needs immediate attention.
  • Broken Denture or Appliance — We can often repair or replace broken dental appliances quickly.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries — Cuts or lacerations to the lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums from trauma or accidents.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it's dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline — do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket if you can. If not, keep it moist in a glass of milk or between your cheek and gum, and get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it.

  • How do I manage a toothache before my appointment?

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum as this can cause a chemical burn. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling, and call us right away to schedule an emergency visit.

  • Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?

Yes. We reserve time in our schedule specifically for dental emergencies. When you call, let us know it's urgent and we'll do our best to see you the same day — often within hours of your call.

  • What if my dental emergency happens after hours?

If you experience a dental emergency outside of our office hours, call our main line at (778) 401-4001 and follow the prompts for emergency instructions. If you are experiencing uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or a jaw injury, please go to your nearest hospital emergency room.

  • Is emergency dental care covered by insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover emergency treatment such as exams, X-rays, and procedures needed to relieve pain or treat infection. Our team will check your coverage and help you understand your benefits before we begin treatment.

  • My child chipped a tooth — is that an emergency?

It depends on the severity. A small chip with no pain may not require immediate treatment, but if there is pain, sensitivity, or a sharp edge that could cut the tongue or lip, you should bring your child in as soon as possible. We provide gentle children's dental care for all ages.
