Botox at the Dentist? Why We Treat Jaw Pain and Headaches at Our Maple Ridge Clinic

Posted Jul 25th, 2026 in Dental Health Tips

Botox at a dental office? It surprises people — until they learn why. At Kanaka Creek Family Dental in Maple Ridge, Dr. Sabrina Bhatti provides therapeutic Botox® treatment for jaw clenching, TMJ-related pain, and tension-type headaches — problems that walk into a dental office every single day.

Why Would a Dentist Provide Botox?

Few health professionals know the muscles of your face and jaw better than a dentist. Dentists study head and neck anatomy in depth, work around the chewing muscles daily, and — crucially — are often the first to spot the cause of jaw pain: clenching and grinding (bruxism), an overworked masseter muscle, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) strain.

That's why therapeutic Botox fits naturally into dental care. Rather than treating a cosmetic concern, we use it to relax the specific overactive muscles that drive jaw soreness, morning headaches, and worn-down teeth.

What Can Therapeutic Botox Help With?

  • Jaw clenching & teeth grinding (bruxism) — relaxing the masseter and temporalis muscles reduces the intensity of clenching, protecting your teeth and easing soreness.
  • TMJ-related discomfort — when jaw joint pain is muscle-driven, reducing muscle overactivity can bring real relief.
  • Tension-type headaches and migraine-prone patterns linked to jaw muscle strain, especially the kind you wake up with.

Botox works alongside — not instead of — other treatments. Many patients pair it with a custom night guard that protects the teeth themselves while the muscles learn to relax.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

1. Assessment. Dr. Bhatti examines your jaw muscles, bite, and symptoms to confirm the pain is muscle-driven and that Botox is an appropriate option for you.

2. Treatment. The injections themselves take only minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch — no anesthetic needed, and you can drive yourself home and return to your day.

3. Results. The effect builds gradually over about one to two weeks. Relief typically lasts around three to four months, after which treatment can be repeated if it's helping.

Is It Safe?

Botox (botulinum toxin type A) has decades of clinical history and is administered in very small, targeted doses. Like any treatment it has potential side effects — usually minor and temporary, like tenderness at the injection site — and it isn't right for everyone. That's exactly why treatment starts with a proper assessment rather than a request form. If you're pregnant, nursing, or have certain neuromuscular conditions, we'll recommend against it.
