How to Manage Bleeding Gums at Home?

Posted May 11th, 2021

Healthy, pink gums not only indicate good oral health but also enhance your smile and facial esthetics. However, if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or eat anything, it could indicate an underlying dental problem.

According to the American Dental Association, gum bleeding can occur due to various reasons such as gum inflammation, trauma, use of certain medication, hormonal changes. If you are concerned about bleeding from your gums, then read on. This article offers various tips that you can follow to stop gum bleeding.

Home Remedies to Stop Gum Bleeding

Brushing and Flossing

One of the significant causes of gum inflammation and bleeding is poor oral health. When you ignore brushing, plaque and tartar deposits form on your teeth, promoting the  adhesion of harmful bacteria. These bacteria release toxins that damage our gums, leading to swelling, sensitivity, and bleeding. By simply ensuring to brush your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily, you can easily stop gum bleeding.

Step up your Oral Hygiene Game

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, you can also add a Waterpik to your oral health routine. A Waterpik is a simple device that releases a pressurized stream of water to remove food and bacterial debris deposited between your teeth. Findings of a clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry showed that the Waterpik was significantly more effective in removing interdental plaque than the toothbrush and conventional string floss.

When it comes to your oral health, you can never be too careful. You may also consider using powered toothbrushes to ensure optimal hygiene. Modern powered brushes have bristles that vibrate at a very high frequency, thereby ensuring thorough plaque and tartar removal. The better the cleaning, the lesser are the chances of gum bleeding.

Perfect your Brushing Technique

Another common reason for gum bleeding is when you use excessive force while brushing. When you brush your teeth with excessive force, there is a direct injury to the gums that can lead to inflammation and recession. Therefore, the Canadian Dental Association recommends using gentle forces while brushing and using a soft-bristled toothbrush that contains ADA seal of approval.

Visiting your Dentist Regularly

Even if you follow a meticulous oral hygiene routine, you may still get bleeding gums. Therefore, the American Academy of Periodontology recommends visiting your dentist regularly for checkups so that underlying problems with your oral health can be diagnosed and treated timely before they cause permanent damage.

Bleeding gums indicate a serious dental health problem. However, the good news is that this problem can be easily managed. Simply follow the tips mentioned above, and see your hygienist every 6 months for dental cleaning, you won’t have to worry about gum inflammation anymore.
