Posted Mar 10th, 2019 in News

Feeling anxious about your next trip to the dentist ? Worried about all the different smells and sounds?

Dental anxiety is very common. Most patient have mild to moderate anxiety when visiting the dentist. However, when this anxiety stops you from coming in to get your biannual cleaning and check up, then it's time to talk to your dentist. We offer different kind of sedation options for your comfort and convenience.

Patient can suffer from either a dental phobia or dental anxiety. Dental phobia is a severe condition where a patient experiences intense fear of the dentist. This fear is often unreasonable, causing a patient to avoid the dentist for years or even decades. Dental anxiety causes patient to have moderate fear that causes unease before an appointment. Both conditions can be treated by working closely with your dentist to avoid trigger and set your mind at ease.

Most anxiety in the dental field is rooted in a poor past experience. Dentistry has had major advancements in the past few decades and many are focused on creating a more calming environment for patients. At Kanaka Creek family dental we are proud to promote a stress free environment. This includes a relaxing chair, entertainment during your appointment (television), a welcoming decor, blankets for when you are cold, and tool to make your appointment go seamlessly. Visit our comfort page to see how we go above and beyond for our patient.

For patient with mild dental anxiety we are happy to offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. Laughing gas can be used to immediately relieve anxiety and offers very little side effects. The effects wear off moments after use, allowing you to be relaxed for your appointment and then continued on with your busy day!

For patient who suffer from moderate to severe dental anxiety we do offer oral sedation in the form of Triazolam. Triazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine that acts to suppress anxiety during an appointment. Patient often feel more relax and can possibly fall asleep during their appointment. For those patient with an extremely high phobia, IV sedation can be considered. For more information feel free to call our office to speak to the team! We are happy to set up a consultation appointment to review your fears and make a individualized plan for you and your family.
